History by the Book meets to discuss historical fiction and non-fiction books. We explore the deeper stories behind historical events and periods in the past.
In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose packed a cotton bag for her daughter Ashley before she was sold. Decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack. Historian Tiya Miles traces these women's stories through archives, objects, art, and the environment to create a poignant history of slavery and uncertain freedom in the United States. All That She Carried honors the resilience and love of those who preserved family ties despite the odds and illustrates how to reconstruct their stories today.
