History by the Book meets to discuss historical fiction and non-fiction books. We explore the deeper stories behind historical events and periods in the past.
This month we are reading: Finding Margaret Fuller by Allison Pataki
Margaret Fuller, a brilliant and daring woman, joins Ralph Waldo Emerson’s circle of Transcendentalists in the 19th century, becoming a muse to literary giants like Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne. As the first female foreign news correspondent, she reports on significant events across Europe while mingling with cultural luminaries such as Frederic Chopin and Walt Whitman. Margaret defies conventions time and again as an activist for women and an advocate for humanity, earning admirers and scathing critics alike, embodying the spirit of a true vanguard.
