Fame is nice, but what about infamy? Edgy Pages is a club for exploring books that are the stuff of controversy and scandal, or inherently provocative.
This month we read Rachel Kushner's Creation Lake.
A thirty-four-year-old American woman, using the alias "Sadie Smith," is an undercover agent sent to infiltrate a rural commune of French subversives. What starts as a mission to incite unrest takes a deeper turn when she becomes captivated by Bruno Lacombe, a mysterious mentor who advocates for a return to ancient ways as a form of liberation. As Bruno's counter-histories and tragic story seduce her, the boundaries of control blur in this edgy, fast-paced noir narrative.
