History by the Book meets to discuss historical fiction and non-fiction books. We explore the deeper stories behind historical events and periods in the past.
In this novel, Cristina Henriquez intertwines the lives of Francisco, a local fisherman, his son Omar, and Ada Bunting, a determined teenager from Barbados, against the backdrop of the ambitious Panama Canal project. Francisco struggles with Omar's decision to work on the canal, while Ada seeks employment to afford her sister's surgery. John Oswald, a scientist focused on eradicating malaria, hires Ada after witnessing her compassion. Their stories converge, revealing a narrative of ambition, loyalty, and sacrifice among various individuals overlooked by history.
