History by the Book meets to discuss historical fiction and non-fiction books. We explore the deeper stories behind historical events and periods in the past.
In They Called Us Enemy, George Takei shares his childhood experience of being forcibly relocated to a Japanese American internment camp during World War II. At just four years old, he and his family were among thousands imprisoned under Executive Order 9066, facing years of hardship behind barbed wire. Through vivid storytelling and striking illustrations by Harmony Becker, Takei, alongside co-writers Justin Eisinger and Steven Scott, reflects on the injustice, resilience, and hope that shaped his future.
